The KonKan railway case: the blurred lines between development and disruption

A project intended to unite cities ended up dividing people.

The KonKan railways were built over the Western Ghatts; a region that was considered one of the worlds top biodiverisity spots.

It was supposed to open up markets, education and healthcare to small-scale farmers and villagers , but instead forced them to allocate more money towards their factors of production or sell for a lesser price due to the competitive markets. They weren’t able to afford fertilizers, pesticides and other factors that allowed them to produce large yeilds in short time spans.

Instead of making the villages grow economically, it deserted them, with younger generations re-locating to more populated areas and causing mass deforestation with potential risks of landslides and erosion, which would’ve cost a large amount in restoration, management and ruined the foundation of this land leading to social displacement, the loss of biodiversity and caused serious threats to the potential of accessibility to smaller vendors and their organic crops
